I Bake
Tuesday, September 05, 2006, 5:14 AM
Or rather I used to bake a bunch. I still bake but I don't 'do' cakes anymore.
Hey, my husband says I'm a great cook but a better...'Baker'. Yeah... I know. It's corny but I kinda like it. ;0]
Here are some of my cakes. I do some occasionally, but after I had epicondylitis (tennis elbow) in both arms five years ago....I maybe do, one or two fancy cakes a year. I certainly did my last wedding cake this past winter...I don't care what anyone says. I ain't doin' it no more.
So, enjoy.
A close up of these layers
I don't know if you can tell, but this was 'A Bug's Life' theme cake I designed.
And Winnie the Pooh. Another Pam original. (That blue/purple is almost the color of the St. Valentines cake I did for Bill that I mentioned in my previous post)
I made a peppermint candy cake for a work related Christmas party one year. I used a stencil for the tree and holly. That is a lot of fun to do.
You can see what this one was for. Bill drew the scissors and the camera from diecuts and I 'colorflowed' them. I tried to get ricepaper prints for the pics but had to laminate them instead.
I found a coloring book and made a stencil of Batman and filled it in with stars. I didn't like doing stars. Too much work. His cape went down the side.

I practised making cakes one month and it happened to be Easter and I donated the cakes to a soup kitchen.

Lesson learned with Barbie. A real barbie doll is too tall to stand up in a traditional 'dress' cake form. Spend the 3 or 5 bucks and buy the barbie 'pick' to stick in the cake. To fix this, as no one had a barbie 'pick' and the cake was due the next day, I made another 'dress' cake and cut the bottom off and stacked it.
In this picture it's hard to make out the 'brands' I had put in. The frosting looked like leather and the brands were hand drawn and stained.
I designed this cake as well. I took a toothpick and drew 'woodgrain' on the coffin. Then piped nails with dark frosting. The tombstone is cardboard covered with royal icing. I was particularly proud of the miniture long stem roses on the coffin.
Just so you know, sometimes I didn't prepare my cake well enough. I should have stabilized the cake with dowels or tubes inserted thru the center....

Another wedding cake.
I loved the dancing couple. I think I still have it in my cake stuff. So romantic.
A 'first job' cake... and my first rolled fondant.
Photo's a bit washed out but another wedding cake...
Birthday cake for a teen
I later added the center fork to make them 'peace signs' as opposed to Mercedes signs. Heheheeee.
Another birthday cake
Okay, are you as tired of looking at cakes as I am tired of looking at things I can no longer do anymore????
Right.
So, what do you do or what did you do for a hobby?? C'mon, post those pictures. Show us your talent. Tell me you posted and I promise I will come oooo and ahhhh.
Abiento!

Pam,
Oh my goodness you have such a talent for decorating cakes. They are so beautiful!!!
Well thank you for being so sweet!!
♥Pam
You are VERY talented! I am lucky if I can bake a plain cake...and not always from scratch!
Hey, e-mail me for a link *wink*!!!
Oh my goodness. You are so talented, Pam. I attempted to learn once and unfortunately my wrist problems made it really painful.
You, my dearest, can bake me a cake any day!
PS: You could start a business and really clean up on your talent!
Oh MB, I can't do it as a business.
It's my tennis elbow thing. I also had to give up rock climbing for it too. Really bummed me out.
♥Pam
LOVE those cakes! I really liked the "Pooh" and the "Barbie" ones...very cool!
Your cakes are awesome.
PAM!!!!!!!!!!!!! where have you been all my life!!!! I gained 4 pounds just drooling over the pictures!
Wow, what talent. Sorry you aren't able to do it any more. I have RA so know the feeling of not being able to do the things you use to.
Amazing cake decorating talent Pam, I wouldn't have the patience to do even a fraction of that!
back again for virtual calories, lol, and a test comment :D
Now THIS is a test!
Those cakes are FREAKIN' AWESOME!!! They are truly incredible!
The fax machine is soooo appropriate though, because that's what we want to do to them!
Wow Pam. Those cakes are amazing.
My e-mail address is jlewis000 at hotmail.com
I'm speechless with awe. I have no talent to compare to this. HOLEEEEEE COW.
Those are really nice Pam.. I really like the tie :)
You blow me away. I have epicondylitis, too, and have never played tennis! And I'm a "baker," too! Twins I tell you!
Holy Crap!! Those cakes are amazing, especially the fax one - it looks exactly like my fax when I was through with it after the paper jammed.
I'm deflated, as I was reading your profile and posts I had the phrase 'Where have you been all my life' all ready to go, but some guy already said it, Damn!
We have a lot of similarities including the fact that I'm a Dink with two dogs and three cats and a movie afficionado. But most importanly I love Lynyrd Skynyrd (hey I even know how they got their name), Yes and Pink Floyd. OK we drift apart on some of the others but the world needs diversity.
I'll probably spend some time perusing so don't be surprised to get comments on old posts over the next couple of weeks.
Oh one more thing, I can't stand the term GLOB, but I don't have the heart to chide her as she's a newbie.
Hi Willowtree. So glad to have ya here! I hope I didn't come across as chiding her but it was bad enough when I became a 'blogger' now to add 'globber'. *pained expression on face*
Thanks all for your kind comments. Mar, my boy was home last night, so I didn't get any real computer time but I will try the test this evening after work!!!
And...folks...I LOVED my fax machine back when I was doing homecare. I had no problems with mine and it saved me a 16 mile trip to the opposite side of town on our highway that was under reconstruction so...my catch phrase was..."Fax It". Plus I hated going in to the office. But that cake was for another gal and she lived up in Woodland Park and her commute was much worse so she loved her's too.
It was nice to reminisce looking at all those cakes and makes me want to make some more. But I have to save it for special occasions. It also makes me want CAKE...yikes.
♥Pam
They are really beautiful Pam. You really have a talent.
It's hard to pick my favourite one but I loved the colours in Winnie's cake.
Wow Pam!
I am not quite sure how I missed this post!
OMG these are great!
I know exactly what you say about the cakes. They are alot of work!
Have you ever done the gum flowers? I have never done them for a cake.
I practice them as much as I can.
